What is the “Highland Gathering Amanzimtoti”?
The 59th edition of Highland Gathering Amanzimtoti Lions Club takes place on the 30th April 2022. This event celebrates the Scottish Culture, that is still alive and very strong in South Africa. This is taking place over a long weekend with Wednesday, the 27th, Freedom Day and Workers Day being on Sunday, the 1st of May, making by default Monday, the 2nd of May, another public holiday.
This is the perfect reason to make this a weekend to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and head down to Amanzimtoti.
Amanzimtoti Lions PRO said that the 59th annual Highland Gathering could be the biggest. Over the years, Amanzimtoti Lions Club has ramped up the pace of events, and this year its 59th annual Highland Gathering is expected to draw around 12,000 people, making it the largest public event hosted by Amanzimtoti.
Saturday will be packed with exciting, not to be missed events. The gates will open at 09h00, with secure parking available at R 20.00 per vehicle at the Amanzimtoti Rugby Club.

About the “Highland Gathering Amanzimtoti”
Amanzimtoti Lions PRO, Lyon Andre Bitge, said that what sets the 59th edition of Highland Gathering apart from previous years is the new approach to bringing in Toti rather than relying on a handful of Amanzimtoti Lions Club members to run the event.
Amanzimtoti Lions PRO said organizers hope Toti will be involved, ranging from pubs and restaurants showcasing Scottish tartan to inviting visitors and locals alike with specialty drinks and traditional cuisine.
Entertainment will include a beauty pageant, numerous interesting events and displays and a selection of local bands, and beer tents.
The lifestyle fair will have a children’s area with fun rides, games and entertainment. NGOs representing their organizations will include the Pink Drive, Amanzimtoti Trauma Unit and Reach for a Dream Foundation.

Attractions
Numerous attractions include the Splash (water slides), Lords & Legends sports facility and a local night market, as well as the annual Toy Bike Ride.
The 59th Highland Gathering will be featuring numerous pipe bands from across the country. Spectators are in for a not-to-be-missed event in the afternoon when when the brass bands will take part in a grand finale: the Mass Band March.
It is expected that pipe bands and groups of highland dancers from all over the country will take part in the events.

The Scottish bagpipes
Bringing a sense of sad nostalgia to any listener, bagpipes are synonymous with Scottish cultural heritage, and bagpipe competitions are a vital element of Highland Gathering Amanzimtoti games. An integral element of the highlanders’ games is the mysterious synchronization of the highlanders’ dances.

Excitement
Excitement is in the air as Toti prepares for the 2022 Highland Gathering Amanzimtoti.
Amanzimtoti is located south of Durban and is a popular family holiday destination throughout South Africa.
The Scottish bagpipe Bands, dancers and other participants are accompanied by family members and supporters who need shelter, fuel and food for four days and bring a much needed income to the Amanzimtoti area.
